We received a picture from Denis Muys depicting a very special visitor from South America. Only one earlier observation of the Southern Lapwing (Vanellus chilensis) had been officially recorded, so this sighting is quite extraordinary. Even more remarkably, Mr. Muys reports two juveniles, so the species nested successfully on Curaçao.
Recently we were also lucky to encounter one of them at the water hole at Malpais. My first impression was: now what, a kievit (Lapwing)?!, not realizing that a South American family member of the familiar European Vanellus vanellus might be so good to pay us a visit. A delightful experience. So keep your eyes open. Maybe you’ll be treated to a sighting too!
