On Curaçao different types of ducks occur, some of which are breeding birds. The best known and most common duck species is the so called Bahama or White-cheeked Pintail duck (Anas bahamensis). This light brown duck is fairly easy to recognize by the bright white bands below the beak and the contrasting bright red-orange markings on the bill itself. You might also encounter the Blue-winged Teal (Anas discors) and other less commonly seen species.
Such an unusual guest is the Black-bellied whistling-duck (Dendrocygna autumnalis). This visitor from South America sometimes honors the leeward islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao with its presence. It’s a pretty big bird, which can get to a length of 50 cm. The animal exhibits conspicuous behavior: in addition to its anatomically long legs it stands straight upright so the size becomes even more apparent.
